TSheets looked at Labor Department wage cases going back 30 years and found that the energy sector paid average back wages of nearly $57,000, according to the data. The sector, which pays high wages, has faced several lawsuits recently from workers in Houston who were paid by the day and contend they were shorted overtime pay when they worked more than 40 hours a week.
Employees who work in utilities received the second highest payout as a result of wage cases, receiving an average $30,000 in back pay, according to TSheets. The information sector, which includes media companies, paid out an average of $28,000 per employee while finance and insurance firms paid an average of $25,000.
Educational services rounded out the list, with an average of $20,000 going to employees who were shorted on wages.
