Gas prices fall, could continue to go lower
Tuesday September 6, 2016
The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline slipped 3 cents locally to $2. Nationally, the average price also fell 3 cents to $2.19 a gallon.
The average price at Houston pumps is about 6 cents higher than a month ago, but 21 cents lower than the same time last year. Nationally, prices are up 7 cents from the beginning of August, but down 21 cents from a year ago.
Analysts at GasBuddy, which tracks gasoline prices and refining activity, expect prices to fall over the next several months as demand wanes and refiners switch to less expensive winter fuel blends.
“With the summer driving season now behind us, what we see ahead looks terrific for motorists,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy. ” The only possible wrench could be a major hurricane that takes aim for the Gulf of Mexico, where many oil rigs and refiners are located, or a sudden cut in oil output from OPEC.”
Here are average prices in some other Texas cities:
Austin: $1.99 a gallon, down 3 cents from last week’s $2.02.
Waco: $1.98 a gallon down 1 Â cent from last week’s $1.99
College Station: $2.06 a gallon, down 1 cent from last week’s $2.07.
